First, let me start by saying I have followed the “never to wear white after Labor Day” rule in the past… in elementary school. I know what you’re thinking…’who the hell cares?’ I’m just letting you know that I was taught all the funny rules of high society (old school high society) at a young age. I was a Cotillion and Debutante girl. I’m all about tradition, but this rule never stuck with me. I mean, what is the POINT? How did this ‘rule’ in fashion even come about?? I’ll tell you.
Turns out, this rule dates back to the Civil War era. After the war was over it became more and more difficult to tell who was of old money and who was new money since millionaires started popping up all over the place. High Society b****es of the old money world wanted everyone to know who they were and stand out from the crowd. So, they started making up these crazy fashion rules. Even if you came to a show with a dress on worth more than a typical American’s yearly salary, but it was the wrong sleeve length, the women of ‘true’ old money society would know not to give you the time of day. SAVAGE.
White was a color stuffed into the closet after Labor Day and didn’t see the light of day until Memorial Day. White was for weddings and resort wear. One of the most famous rule-breakers of this tradition was Coco Chanel, who wore white year round. Way to set the tone of the modern age. Honestly, fashion is not about how wealthy you are or how well you follow the ‘rules’. To me, there are no ‘RULES’. Fashion is an art form that you wear that best represents you and your personality-no matter the time of the year.
I’ve always been fascinated in the revolution of fashion over the years, and I wish I could go back in time wearing something of today. I think the ‘high class’ snobs would FLIP. I may even be arrested? I don’t know, but it sounds like fun. Moral of the story-wear whatever the hell makes you feel your most confident and best YOU. The trends come and go, but don’t be afraid of starting your own. I’ve got my ‘winter whites’ and ‘spring essentials’ and I’m love wearing each of them.
I’ve linked my outfit along with a bunch of cute white picks! Spring whites can be a pretty blouse, eyelet lace tops or dresses. Winter whites consist of white sweaters, coats, and other warmer clothes. There are so many ways to wear white!
